The VIN is a 17-character code standardised worldwide by ISO 3779. Positions 1–3 identify the manufacturer (WMI), 4–9 describe the vehicle (VDS), and 10–17 pin down the exact production unit (VIS) — including plant, year and sequence. That last block is what turns a generic model into a specific part list.
Locate the VIN in at least two places to be sure it was not repainted or replaced: the windshield lower-left corner, the driver-side door jamb, the engine bay stamping, and the V5/registration document. Any mismatch is a red flag — one wrong character will land you on a different variant with different suppliers.
Verify the VIN is well-formed. The 9th character is an ISO 3779 check digit; free validators like vindecoderz or NHTSA’s vPIC will tell you if it is invalid before you spend time searching. NHTSA vPIC (US) and the EU EUCARIS network decode most makes for free.
Open the manufacturer parts catalogue. VAG group uses ETKA, Mercedes uses EPC (WIS/EWA), BMW is covered by the free RealOEM.com, Ford by ETIS, and Toyota/Lexus by the official EPC-Net. Paste the VIN, navigate to the assembly group, and use the illustration — the numbered callouts map one-to-one with the OEM code column on the same page.
Cross-check the code in a second source before ordering. TecDoc, oemepc.com and marketplace listings that display fitment let you confirm the code is valid for your VIS. When two independent catalogues agree, you can order with confidence. If they disagree, send us the VIN and the position — verifying references is a daily task for our team.
